The Sony Reality Audio operates on the same concept as Dolby Atmos.
Individual sounds/instruments are recorded and then when mixed not only is their volume and tone encoded but also their position in 3D space.
Compatible equipment is required.
Usually the set up of these devices involves the sending of test tones in different directions which the device uses to “listen” to the reflections and effectively measures the size and shape of the room [like a bat?].
This allows it to introduce tiny delays to give the impression that the sound is coming from above and behind as well as left and right.
The results are, fairly obviously, not on par with having multiple speakers but it does help if you are watching video while listening which helps to convince the brain of the directions from which sounds are arriving.
