Huawei has announced by 2016 they have sold over 106 million smartphones worldwide. To get to that amount there must be something to their sales strategy. A lower price tag to the competitor and a desirable product seems to work and the Huawei Mate 9 is a perfect example.
On the front of the device is a 5.9” LCD display, 1080×1920 full HD working out at 373 ppi. 1500:1 contrast ratio, 96% saturation, 16.7M colors. The Mate 9 runs Android 7.0 Nougat with their own EMUI 5.0 on top.
Inside the device is 4GB LPDDR4-1800 RAM, 64GB of storage, expandable up to 2TB via micro-SDXC. And all this is powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 960 with 4 x A73 cores clocked at 2.36GHz. There are also 4 x A53 cores clocked at 1.84 GHz with integrated dual 14-bit Image Signal Processor (ISP) and an i6 sensor hub. The latest Mali-G71MP8 Bifrost 900MHz GPU is also included with support for OpenGL ES 3.2 (Vulkan).
There is a dual camera setup with a 20MP Monochrome and a 12MP RGB sensor with f/2.2 aperture, Optimal Image Stabilisation, and phase-detection auto-focus. There are a few new camera features also, including Hybrid Zoom, 4-in-1 Auto-Focus features, and dual LED flash. 8MP front-facing camera with f/1.9. Recording 4K video at 30FPS is possible.
There is a Non-removable, 4,000 mAh LiPo battery with proprietary fast-charging protocol named “SuperCharge”. Fingerprint sensor with gesture support, Infrared sensor, NFC support, WiFi 2.4/5 GHz with 802.11a/b/g/n/ac with WiFi Direct support and Bluetooth 4.2 support with BLE. On the bottom sits a USB Type-C port (USB 2.1). You may either use 1 x micro-SDXC slot + 1 nano-SIM slot, or have a dual SIM set-up by inserting two nano-SIMs into the slot
The Dimensions of the Mate 9 are 156.9mm height; 78.9mm width; 7.9mm thick. 190g weight. There is a Stereo speaker grill on the top and bottom of the device, a 3.5mm headphone jack, 4 microphones positioned through the body of the device, allowing for directional sound recording. Noise cancellation during calls possible with microphone positioned within the loudspeaker.
The Mate 9 will be available in Space Gray, Moonlight Silver, Champagne Gold, Mocha Brown, Ceramic White or just Black.
Huawei also unveiled a 5.5″ QHD “Pro” model with 6GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage which they co-designed with Porsche which costs a fair bit higher (€1395) and will be available exclusively in Graphite Black. We have previously seen Porsche lend their design flourishes and name to the odd Blackberry in the past.
