The Sony Xperia XZ Premium and XZs in a nutshell

If there is one flagship that nearly always flies, unjustly, under the radar it’s Sony’s yearly offering. Each one feels like the last as it’s often been rumoured that Sony will be leaving the smartphone arena. Their phones have a particular loyalty that can only be resembled by Apple and yet we rarely see folks pushing the latest Sony as a viable alternate. Every year there is a post with a positive attitude that this is they year of the Xperia, both it becomes just another option, way, way down the list at Carphone Warehouse, below four different iPhones, six different Samsungs and a couple of LG’s. The XZ Premium smartphone was launched in at Mobile World Congress 2017 and needs to be seen.

The Premium is one of the first devices to utilise the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, supported by an Adreno 540 GPU. The phone comes with a beautiful 5.50-inch 4K touchscreen display with a resolution of 2160 pixels by 3840 pixels. RAM has been upgraded from 3GB to 4GB. The phone packs 64GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 256GB via a microSD card. As far as the cameras are concerned, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium packs a 19-megapixel primary camera on the rear with 5-axis stabilisation and a 13-megapixel front shooter for selfies. This new sensor is capable of recording 960 fps video allowing for silky smooth slow motion capture.

Android 7.1 is in play and all is powered by a 3230mAh non-removable battery, how the fares against the 4k screen will be interesting to see. The Snapdragon 835 comes with Quick Charge 4 support, yet Sony announced the XZ Premium with Quick Charge 3.0.


The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is a single SIM. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and NFC. Sensors on the phone include Proximity sensor, Accelerometer and Ambient light sensor. It measures 156.00 x 77.00 x 7.90 (height x width x thickness) and weigh 195.00 grams.

But there is more, The Sony Xperia XZs was also announced, with a smaller 5.20-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1080 pixels by 1920 pixels with 424 ppi. Again we have 4GB of RAM, however, a smaller storage option with 32GB with an expandable microSD card and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 has been employed. The same 19-megapixel primary camera on the rear and a 13-megapixel front shooter on the Sony Xperia XZ Premium is included. Running Android 7.0 and the battery is a little smaller to suit the phone profile, a 2900mAh non-removable option. It measures 146.00 x 72.00 x 8.10 (height x width x thickness) and weigh 161.00 grams.
